ADOR Info Release--Automatic Filing Extension Reminder

 Alabama Department of Revenue

Need More Time to File Your Tax Return?
Extension Forms Not Required

Information Release
March 12, 2009

Montgomery—The Alabama Department of Revenue (ADOR) reminds individual and business taxpayers that they are no longer required to file an Alabama extension form if they find they cannot meet their annual return filing deadlines.

Taxpayers will be given an automatic single six-month extension to file their returns or a single five-month extension for Alabama Form 65 or Form 41.  All taxpayers filing individual income, corporate income, and business privilege tax returns are included in this reminder.  Taxpayers filing financial institution excise tax returns are excluded and must request a filing extension by filing the Form ET-8.

The ADOR adopted this policy change through the administrative rules process, in accordance with the Administrative Procedures Act.

Taxpayers are reminded that the automatic extension only applies to a filing extension; no extensions are granted for payment.  All tax payments are due by the original due date of the return.

The ADOR annually processes over 100,000 extension requests for individual income tax filers and approximately 83,000 extension requests for business taxpayers.
